The “El Mundo” newspaper is reporting (25th April 2006) that Spain’s ruling socialist party is considering proposals to grant Human Rights to all “great apes” which include humans, bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas and orang-utans. The proposal is scheduled to be discussed in parliament at the end of May. After New Zealand, Spain would be the second country to grant special rights to apes.
This would be funny stuff if it weren’t so serious - it is scandalous that a country like Spain would grant rights to apes, “thus giving them more rights than unborn human embryos”, according to the archbishop of Pamplona and Tudela, Fernando Sebastián.
Whacked sense of justice I say, for a country that “boasted” 85,000 abortions in 2004, and soaring. Wikinews article here.
