Mid-week meetings.
August 5, 2006 by John Baw
We are currently having two mid-week cell meetings - Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Tuesdays we have a cell group that meets in homes in Gibraltar - we rotate home every week so for example I host the cell meeting once every four weeks. This group is now approaching the size where it is getting too big to allow good discussion on points that we share (It is not uncommon to get fifteen people plus children in this cell and so sometimes we even have difficulties fitting people into the lounge area of the home involved). So I think that a mitosis is at hand….or at least it is in the pipeline. On Thursdays we have the cell group that meets in La Linea, Spain. We are currently having those meetings in one home every Thursday.
Something concerns me however. I am having to lead/moderate these two midweek meetings, plus the Sunday service - that is three meetings a week. I find that I need to dedicate quality time to my young boys (Including having a couple of "kids meetings" at home - sort-of like a fun time devotional with Aaron and Eli) and to my lovely wife. I am resolved to being at home four nights a week - being in meetings more than this for me is out of the question….my family comes first (Those of you who do not agree with this stance … tough! Adjust!
) This all leaves precious little time for engaging in outreach activities. As a small fellowship, it must be all about outreach, outreach outreach! As someone has said, "we know that, at root, the early days of planting a new church are primarily about one thing - outreach. Evangelism. Gathering people. Forming a new community" (Jeff Bailey, Editor, Cutting Edge Magazine, Vineyards USA - Summer ‘02 edition p.3.) . Yet how do I model and spearhead something that I am going to be too thinly stretched to do? I am thinking of handing over the moderation of the Thursday cell to someone else in order to go to that cell maybe every other week, plus we also have the possibility of dedicating one cell meeting every three weeks or so to pure outreach activities …. let us pray that famous prayer of childlike trust: "Oh God! Oh God! Oh God!" I need some input!
