Eli: Dad I had a dream and I saw you in it.
Dad: Really? Was it a nice dream?
Eli: Yes - did you see me?
Dad: Ermm … no baby I cannot see you ‘cos it is a dream.
Eli: Yes but you were there - I saw you!
Dad: (Trying to explain) You can see me but I cannot see you - that is the way it works in dreams.
Eli: Ok. But next time I will sleep with you, and our heads can touch - in that way there will be some electricity that we will not feel and so we will be connected and you will be able to see me ok?
Dad: [Totally gives up at this point]

That is the cutest thing! I would have told him that not only did I see him but I smiled at him. I then would have asked why he did not smile back.
