In the Old Testament there is a special blessing or declaration that the priests used to proclaim over the children of Israel. As priests, or go-betweens, they faced the people of Israel representing the Lord their God….. then they turned around and faced the Lord their God representing the children of Israel. As go-betweens, standing in the gap and representing the Lord’s agenda, they had a duty to invoke the name of the Lord upon Israel. They used a specific wording for this blessing that went like this:
“The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” -(Numbers 6:22-27)
Through this blessing their words prescribed the following:
- The Lord bless you: Prosperity both in the material and spiritual sense.
- …and keep you: Divine Keeping/Protection
- the Lord make His face shine upon you: This speaks of the Lord delighting himself in you!
- …and be gracious to you: Grace-fullness in every area of your life!
- the LORD turn his face toward you: Looking upon you with favour
- …and give you peace: Giving you the Shalom of Heaven
The Hebrew word for “peace”, Shalom, is defined as: שלום –
- Completeness
- Safety/Soundness
- Welfare/Health/Prosperity
- Peace/Quiet/Tranquillity/Contentment
- Friendship
